CHILDREN ARE THE HOTTEST NEW ACCESSORY AT FASHION WEEK

Children on the front row is nothing new. North West’s graced numerous FROW’s in her time, Harper Beckham’s a permanent feature on her dad’s knee at Victoria’s bi-annual New York Fashion Week show and Tamara Ecclestone’s taken her daughter Sophia to a number of catwalk presentations.

But, there seem to be more children than ever at Fashion Week now - both walking (or being carried) in shows and watching them.

Julien Macdonald made a splash at his AW16 show at London Fashion Week yesterday when he included two (very angelic looking) kids in his grand finale.

His much-talked about show, held at the oh-so-grand gothic church One Mayfair, featured a dazzling array of womenswear. But it was the two youngsters who stole the show.

At least, though, they were there for a reason. The British fashion designer is expanding into childrenswear and used the opportunity to give press and buyers a glimpse at what his Kardashian-inspired range would include.

And Macdonald isn’t the only designer to include children in his line-up. At NYFW show Gypsy Sport, a model took to the catwalk with a metal statement necklace and a newborn baby wrapped in a brown blanket as her accessories.

Without a doubt, for autumn/winter 2016, infants have been upgraded from lap seats to spots on the runway itself.

There was a hint of this trend last season, when a number of Dolce & Gabbana models took to the catwalk in Milan with their children in tow.

Some 11 women and their children walked for the high-end label and the line-up even included a heavily pregnant model. But, like Julien Macdonald’s show, there was a reason for the underage additions. The entire SS16 collection was dedicated to mums to allow “fashion to be seen as an extension of where one comes from,” the show’s notes stated.

But for Gypsy Sport there seems to be no rhyme or reason why a baby was included.

It’s not just designers and celebs who are boasting youngsters at Fashion Week. More non-famous attendees than ever are taking their tots to watch fashion shows – even though they would surely rather spend their half term vegged out in front of the TV or out doing just about anything else.

Let’s be honest: Watching models strut down a catwalk definitely isn’t a fun-filled activity for a schoolchild.
